Michael Pollan deserves a lot of credit for his clear thinking and equally articulation of what it means to eat in a healthy way. This is a terrific interview with him. Listen to him and not to any half-wit nutrition industry flack.

The Department of Agriculture, which is partly responsible for the dietary guidelines, has a conflict of interest at the heart of its mission. Its mission is to promote sales of US agricultural products, sell more food, while the dietary guidelines are about helping us curb our appetite for certain foods.

The idea that the Department of Agriculture has anything to do with advising Americans on nutrition is absurd. It’s a product of history and bureaucracy in Washington.
